Digital News Production: First Day of Shooting

In the end, the first day of filming wrapped up quite nicely.

Charlotte and Natasha on the set during the interview.
For the exterior scenes we filmed our reporter/interviewer, Natasha outside walking on the pavement. We had her in different locations for some of these shots to add different layers of variety to it. We were quite lucky to have some very nice locations available to us for this.

The interior scenes took place in my living room where we had a basic set consisting of a settee, tables and the interview participants in shot. We originally used a framed poster in the background but there was a glare from the lighting that was too jarring to keep in.

For the actual interview, we did run into some problems with the lighting as mentioned above. Unfortunately we didn't have much time to prepare beforehand, and had to focus on getting the exposure right. One of the lighting kits wasn't working at that time so we had to work with the two lighting kits that had working bulbs. Despite these problems we did manage to get a good natural interview and I was quite happy with the results. The sound came out very good even though the clip mic wasn't working properly at the start.

We were also able to use a GoPro which really added to the student-esque vibe of the interview and allowed us to get some alternate footage. Overall the days filming was quite easy although we'll have a much harder task on Saturday when we have to show 3-5 separate meals being made for our cooking story and have our presenter, Dave Chawner film scenes based around it.
The days filming ended on a happy note.

Fiction Adaptation: Camera Workshop/Short Films

Today we were given some advice on working behind the camera with a guy named Alex Boorman to lecture our class. We were given the task making three short 30 second films by the end of the day. These were centred on 3 different themes:

'Anger'
'Sadness'
'Happiness'

For this project I formed a duo with Andy Cox and we got to work on the three short films. We had them finished, edited and presented at the end of the day when we were given some advice by Alex. This was useful as it gave us some helpful tips into the type of techniques we can learn about when filming our filming adaptations.

Here are our finished films:

1. Angry (Road Rage)
Starring Andy Cox
Cinematography by Sam McKeown

2. Happiness
Starring Sam McKeown
Cinematography by Andy Cox

3. Sadness
Starring Sam McKeown
Cinematography by Andy Cox

Digital News Production: Project Change: Cheap Student Meals (Idea Development)

What have we changed?

Our group had a meeting yesterday in which we planned out some major changes to our Snapchat story, this included getting rid of some of the decisions that were criticised previously by our class. This means that we wont be focusing on the student selfie idea and what it may convey as it arguably doesn't seem like a very significant story to focus on.

Because of this we have changed our idea, of which I personally feel our new idea is much more informative and useful to our audience. We will create a story showing students how to make decent meals for themselves at home for a cheap price. Our main objective is to show them that you don't need to spend a lot of money to make decent meals and that they are much better for you than takeaways and microwave meals which students can waste a lot of money on.

After we decided on the idea we had a brainstorming session to figure out how we could film and structure the idea.

Structure:
Introduction:
Talk about the negative aspects of unhealthy diets, takeaways etc. and mention that our reporter will be looking into healthier and cheaper options available for students.

Shopping: I felt that it would be good to have a gimmick to get the reporter involved in the story by showing him in the segment buying ingredients in the shop for under £20. We will get permission for this from a nearby supermarket.

Cooking: We will then show the reporter cooking the meal choices we have chosen from the supermarket, showing how to make them in quick steps and show how much they cost.

Ending: The ending will conclude that they don't need to spend their money on expensive food/take aways, show them some affordable options and give them our website address.

Cheap Student Meals:

There are so many different meal choices

Pasta
Chicken
Meat (Chicken/Meat/Beef/Pork etc.)
Rice
Potatoes
Lidl is one of the cheapest supermarkets for students to shop at.
Eggs
Milk
Bread
Peas
Soup

Veggie meals:
Quorn
Salad (Spinach/Lettuce)
Spaghetti Bolognese
Bangers and mash
Chicken Masala

I think that Lidl would be a great place to film.

We could start with our reporter outside Lidl, then we could involved him in the package by having him going in and buying the ingredients, to achieve this we could use the GoPro Camera to get his point of view of what he's buying. We could show a graphic of what he is buying and how much it costs. To round it up we could give an introduction to the supermarket he is shopping at, (most likely Lidl) and then show how much he spent on his total items.

Fiction Adaptation: Essay (First Draft)

Today we are submitting a short draft of our essay and I have a rough copy of that draft below. When I submit it I will double space it and format it correctly in Microsoft Word with a title page. I have only done 850 words since this is only the draft and I want to receive my feedback before I develop the idea further. Stay tuned for further feedback.
